The Student Innovation Centre (SIC) within the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta and Edmonton Unlimited are working together to help bring your big ideas to life.

Experience Ventures and the Student Innovation Centre with Edmonton Unlimited proudly present the Sustainable Oceans Challenge, a unique opportunity for students to engage with critical marine conservation issues.

The Student Innovation Centre (SIC) is a 5,000+ sq. ft workspace dedicated to growing and sustaining a culture of student-led innovation. The SIC is for extracurricular science and technology-based competitions, maker projects, and undergraduate student-led ventures at every stage- from design evaluation to planning for entrepreneurship.

Details

Sustainable Oceans Challenge

Participants will choose from one of eight thought-provoking prompts, each designed to inspire innovative solutions for sustaining our oceans. This challenge not only fosters creativity and problem-solving skills but also emphasizes the importance of environmental stewardship.

Domestic students who participate in the challenge will be eligible for a $525 stipend, supporting their journey in making a tangible impact on ocean sustainability.

Workshops

Idea Generation | Thursday, February 8, 2024  |  5 – 7 p.m.
The best ideas come from problems we encounter in our day-to-day lives. This is an introduction to ideation—the start of solving any problem. Participants will learn tools and a proven framework to strengthen problem-solving skills and identify ideas to move forward with.

Prototyping | Thursday, February 15, 2024  |  5 – 7 p.m.
In this introduction to design thinking, participants will learn a problem-solving approach that puts customers’ needs above all else. Participants will develop a toolkit to apply to their ideas, products, or solutions.

Perfecting the Pitch | Thursday, February 22, 2024  |  5 – 7 p.m.
An elevator pitch is a brief, persuasive speech that entrepreneurs and innovators use to spark interest in their idea or business. Participants will learn the building blocks in this final session to create a memorable and compelling pitch.
