Municipal Leaders Get a Firsthand Look at Innovation in Edmonton

One of the most valuable aspects of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Conference is the opportunity for municipal leaders to step outside the conference venue and experience firsthand what’s happening in communities across the country.

As part of this year’s conference, a group of delegates visited Edmonton Unlimited for a Study Tour focused on innovation, entrepreneurship, and the partnerships helping drive economic growth in Edmonton. The session was designed to create space for conversation and allow participants to ask questions, share experiences, and explore how innovation ecosystems are built and sustained.

Upon arrival, delegates were guided through the space and shared how the organization supports the city’s tech and innovation ecosystem. The tour sparked immediate curiosity. Delegates asked thoughtful questions about how the space is used and about the partnerships and programs that help support entrepreneurs. Many were interested in understanding what elements of Edmonton’s approach could be adapted within their own communities.

Following the tour, delegates gathered for an interactive founder panel moderated by Zack Storms, Lead for Venture Pilots: Built World Tech. Joining the conversation were Lelia Lawson of Zylotex, Kyle Scheuer of Ultracoustics, and Tanay Kumar of Aqtiva, three founders actively building innovative companies in Edmonton.

As participants in Edmonton Unlimited’s Venture Pilots program, each founder brought a unique perspective on commercialization, growth, and the realities of bringing innovation to market. The discussion quickly became a two-way conversation, with delegates engaging directly with the founders and exploring topics ranging from intellectual property and research commercialization to scaling technology companies in Canada.

The conversations didn’t end when the panel wrapped up. Delegates stayed to ask additional questions, connect directly with the founders, and learn more about the programs and partnerships supporting innovation in Edmonton.

That level of engagement was exactly what the Study Tour was designed to inspire. More than a presentation, it was an opportunity for municipal leaders and entrepreneurs to exchange ideas, share experiences, and build connections while gaining a deeper understanding of Edmonton’s tech & innovation ecosystem.
