Fighting racism Edmonton’s Shift Lab deploys innovative and fun prototypes

What is Edmonton’s Shift Lab?

Over the last six years, the Edmonton Shift Lab led the design of anti-racism prototypes with a diverse collective of Edmonton community members. The group harnessed modern human-centered design thinking to develop several prototypes—everything from a fun board game to an anti-racism subscription box.

Edmonton Shift Lab highlights why the world needs more Edmonton. The team and community came together to deliver prototypes to serve as emotional onramps to change. Many of these prototypes continue as standalone social ventures with global impact.

We’re talking about heavy negative subjects, but with these prototypes… we’re offering alternative ways to start and talk about these anti-racism journeys.

The Treaty 6 awareness game, Exploring Wahkôhtowin

Exploring Wahkôtowin [Wah-KOH-toh-win] is a board game for ages 12+ that provides historical context around Treaty 6 while teaching what it means to be a good treaty relative. The game isn’t about winning, but more about collaborative gameplay and building relationships.

Status: Shift Lab and their partners are looking for connections to produce the physical board game and partners for a possible digital version.

The Reflection Pool App
