As we celebrate Earth Day 2022, it’s important to highlight the innovators in Edmonton and across Alberta helping to build a greener tomorrow and tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges like the climate emergency.
Alberta Innovates and Innovate Edmonton are celebrating a dozen companies that are looking to reimagine waste in the province and restoring Canada’s forests. For example, in Edmonton there’s Wild + Pine and [Re] Waste. Last year, we stopped by Wild + Pine’s facility located by the Edmonton International Airport and talked to Founder & CEO Chris Kallal. His company focuses on developing net-zero carbon capture projects through the restoration of Canada’s forests.
We also caught up with Corey Saban, CEO and Founder of [Re] Waste late last year. His company got started when he began researching plastics after exiting the construction industry. “I started looking at the plastic waste that we were producing as a family, and I thought to myself ‘wow there’s a lot of plastic here’,” said Saban. “I slowly began exploring the possibility of creating some type of product from the plastic waste.” In 2021, [Re] Waste launched a collection program with Nova Cannabis & Value Buds. Using 100% recycled cannabis plastic packaging, the company introduced the Canna Bin will be available starting in May 2022.
